Eight vocational colleges across the country are offering a three-year course in drone operations starting from September this year, Trouw reported on Monday.
Some 75 students have registered for the programme, which was set up and officially recognised with unusual speed by the education ministry in August last year, the MBO college council has said.
Drones are increasingly used in the building sector, defence, logistics, security, farming and the film industry but student information for the course particularly emphasises jobs in the army, the paper said.
Some of the colleges are actively working with the defence ministry in a combined training programme, including practical training in an army unit, and a guaranteed job at the end.
The EU needs to boost its drone capacity and the Netherlands wants to be at the forefront of developments.
“The ministry of defence is in a hurry so it is training new people as well. We expect to contribute well-trained people in due course,” training manager Rob Beekmans told the paper.
