The KNMI weather bureau has issued a code amber alarm for almost the entire country on Sunday night, saying snow and black ice will lead to slippery roads, bridges, cycle paths and pavements.

A code yellow warning applies to Zuid-Holland, while Zeeland is likely to be free from ice.

Wintry showers are again expected to move over the country on Sunday evening, but by Monday the thaw will set in and the code amber warning will apply only to the north of the country during the morning rush hour.

The warning marks the fifth code orange alarm this year.

Weather forecasters have also warned skaters that the ice on lakes and ponds is still not thick enough for safe skating. One person has been killed and at least two hospitalised after accidents on frozen waterways.

In Sneek, in Friesland, a man died after falling through ice on a pond close to the main railway station, broadcaster NOS reported.

In Groningen, one person was hospitalised after trying to get his dog off the ice and ending up in freezing water. In Surhuizum, in Friesland, another man had to be taken to hospital after ending up in a ditch when the ice under him gave way.

The coldest overnight temperature recorded at KNMI weather station on Saturday night was -11.6° in Eelde, in Drenthe.

Many outdoor ice rinks are open to skaters on Sunday. The Dutch skating organisation KNSB has a list of open rinks.
