Medical software company Chipsoft has said the patient data stolen in this month’s ransomware attack on its systems has been destroyed, but has not confirmed whether it paid the hackers.

The company, whose software is used by 70% of Dutch hospitals, said in a statement on Tuesday that its cybersecurity experts had verified the destruction “took place in a technically correct manner”.

It did not explain how it could be sure the criminals had not retained copies.

The hackers, a group calling itself Embargo, claimed earlier this month to have stolen 100 GB of data from Chipsoft and threatened to publish it on the dark web, broadcaster NOS reported. Chipsoft said last week it was negotiating with the group.

The attack hit family doctors, rehabilitation clinics and the Rotterdam Eye Hospital, which all use Chipsoft’s cloud-hosted HiX 365 platform. Hospitals running the company’s software on their own servers were not affected.}

Chipsoft said the recovery process was going well “but of course requires care and time”.
