Police are looking for witnesses in connection with the probable murder of a 17-year-old girl from Abcoude whose body was found in the early hours of Wednesday morning in Duivendrecht near Amsterdam.

Following a call from a member of the public, police located the body, which showed signs of violence, at 4am near the water’s edge along the Holterbergweg, close to the Johan Cruijff Arena stadium and concert venue Ziggo Dome.

The police investigation was later extended to include the Burgemeester Stramanweg. A building site adjacent to Ziggo Dome was searched using sniffer dogs while a sweater found in the vicinity was taken for forensic investigation. The area around the slip road the Arena was cordoned off.

A police helicopter circled the area for half an hour after the discovery, Amsterdam broadcaster AT5 reported. Police have not released the girl’s identity or commented on the cause of death but are said to be contemplating “several scenarios”.
