A teenage girl has been arrested following the discovery of two bodies at a house in Meerstad, Groningen province, police confirmed on Thursday morning.

According to Dutch media, the girl is the 13-year-old daughter of the couple, both aged 53, who were found dead at around 2.45am. The girl was arrested shortly afterwards.

So far the police have given no details about what they think happened in the property, because both a “tactical and forensic investigation is ongoing”.

The Telegraaf said a “for sale” sign is in the garden of the terraced home, which according to real estate website Funda has now been sold. A youngster who lived nearby told the paper the family had been planning to move.

A dog which was also at the property was picked up by an animal refugee earlier on Thursday morning.

Meerstad, just a few kilometres east of Groningen city, is a new town popular with families. It is set to have some 6,000 homes when completed.
